Called Pūowaina in Hawaiian, the volcano erupted some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago. Pūowaina (which can be translated as “Hill of Sacrifice”) has deep religious significance for the Hawaiian people. After the Civil War ended in 1865, Americans began to hold tributes to our fallen soldiers. In 1868, May 30 was designated as “Decoration Day”, when soldiers graves were decorated in remembrance of their ultimate sacrifice.
