Hawai’i seasonal fruits & vegetables
Listed below are fruits and vegetables you might expect to see in farmers markets each month. However, consider this a very a rough guide.
- There may be some varieties of produce available year-round, but the most popular variety available in Hawai’i has a shorter peak season.
- Different varieties of fruits and vegetables may be unfamiliar to you and go unrecognized—for example, there are many kinds of bananas, oranges, papayas, eggplants, sweet potatoes, squashes, cabbages, and many types of Asian greens. These varieties may be differently colored or shaped and larger or smaller in size than the commercially grown crops commonly found at supermarkets. Yet, these lesser known, locally grown varieties often have more interesting flavor.
- Weather conditions can affect the harvest on any given day during a season. During periods of excessive (or too little) rain, availability can decrease or disappear altogether.
There are still other fruits and vegetables not listed below that you may find at Hawai’i farmers markets. For example: star apple, banana flower, cherimoya, egg fruit, loquat, mangosteen, white sapote, black/chocolate sapote, soursop (aka guanabana), wing beans, and many more. Be sure to ask about anything that isn’t familiar—find out from the grower how to prepare it and then buy some to take home. You’ll never know until you try it! You may find a new favorite.
Finally, we didn’t include some produce that is common in many supermarkets, such as kale, potatoes, radish, and asparagus, to name a few. So, expect to also find a lot of familiar produce among the surprises.
