The Doris Duke Theatre at HoMA presents five renewed and restored films by director Gregg Araki. The New Queer Cinema pioneer’s cult favorites have seen a resurgence of interest the past few years, with his films taking on new relevancy. This retrospective includes Araki’s breakout hit The Living End, along with his Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy (Totally F***ed Up, The Doom Generation, and Nowhere) and Mysterious Skin. * James Duval, the star of many of Araki’s films, will be at the screenings on June 13 and 15.
- * Totally F***ed Up (1993). June 6, 7, 15, 21, 22. The first in Araki’s Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy delves into the world of gay teenagers and the disproportionately high suicide rate among them.
- * The Doom Generation (1995). June 7, 8, 15, 20, 21. Araki’s second installment in Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy is a disturbingly original portrait of three teenagers going nowhere fast. Starring Rose McGowan, James Duval, and Johnathon Schaech.
- * Nowhere (1997). June 8, 13, 22, 27, 28. Gregg Araki’s third and final installment in his Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy is a dark, twisted antithesis of Beverly Hills, 90210 starring a cast of well-known 90s faces.
- The Living End (1992). June 23, 28, 29, July 7. Araki’s breakout hit at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival that broke boundaries by presenting unfiltered gay male identities on screen.
- Mysterious Skin (2004). June 29, 30, July 5, 6. Based on the novel by Scott Heim, Mysterious Skin is an intensely powerful chronicle of childhood innocence lost with key performances from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Brady Corbet.
