Big wave season is typically during winter (November-March) when the biggest swells barrel towards Hawaiian shores. Maui’s biggest surf break at Pe’ahi is site of the Jaws Big Wave Challenge. Swells can reach up to 70 feet roaring at 30 miles per hour. During the holding period, a 72-hour yellow alert is issued when a consistent forecast guarantees a minimum of 25 feet (8 m) on the wave face throughout the competition. If conditions remain favorable, a Green Alert will be issued, meaning the competition will be on in the next 24 hours.
