In celebration of February as Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language Month) Hawaiian Mission Houses (HMH) is hosting “Nā Mea Aloha: Matters of Affection”. Hawaiian Mission Houses’ archives of early nineteenth century Hawaii contain numerous journals, letters, and the largest collection of Hawaiian language books in the world. At this presentation and talk story, you will learn about Missionary Rev. William Richards (1793-1847), who was stationed at Lahaina, Maui. He taught a class on Western Political Economy to the Ali`i at their request and had a hand in the writing of the 1840 Constitution. In 1842, Timoteo Ha`alilio and Richards were sent on a diplomatic envoy to the United States and Europe to guarantee recognition of the Hawaiian Kingdom as an independent and sovereign country – an envoy that was successful. In response to a letter from his mother, Haʻalilio explains how her letter brought comfort to him in a foreign land. Please feel free to bring your lunch. RSVP directly to archives@missionhouses.org.
