Makahiki ma Kapolei is held on the first Saturday of February every year at Pu‘uokapolei. It’s a free and open event to the public. The event brings together the westside community in a cultural celebration of plenty and peace. As done in earlier times, and likely on the very site of Pu‘uokapolei, the day is filled with mele and games, including ulu maika (stone disk rolling), moa pāhe‘e (dart sliding), hukihuki (tug-of-war), kūkini (foot racing), ‘ō‘ō ‘ihe (spear throwing), and hāpai pōhaku (stone carrying). This event celebrates Makahiki, the Hawaiian New Year, and a four-month period in the Hawaiian Calendar dedicated to peace, agriculture, and communal sports.
