Hawaii Tourism Authority is seeking input on how tourism can best support Maui’s recovery from the August 8 wildfire that is respectful to Lahaina and Upcountry families. A Hawaiʻi State Department of Health assessment found that the greatest priority of wildfire survivor households was financial recovery. Persistently high unemployment and businesses cutting hours or closing has add to the challenges. Across the state, efforts are underway to support Maui’s recovery. The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority is developing a plan to support tourism’s role in the recovery based on input from the Maui community, economic data, and stakeholders throughout the state. Next steps:
- December 1: A draft of how tourism can support Maui’s recovery will be available online for public review and comment: The HTA Tourism Recovery Plan (smshawaii.com)
- December 4: A community meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:00p.m. at Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
