Whatʻs the Buzz around Hilo? World Bee Day is recognized each year at Mokupāpapa Discovery Center (MDC). Bring the whole hive to this family friendly event! Enjoy crafts, cooking demo, beekeeper talks, honey tasting, vendors, and more! There will bee local beekeepers and experts on hand to answer questions and offer advice on supporting and protecting bee populations. World Bee Day (officially May 20) helps to raise awareness of the importance of bees and other pollinators for our ecosystem, food security, and livelihoods. Over 75% of global food crops depend on pollinators, such as bees, for their production. Habitat loss, climate change, pesticides, and disease have all led to declines in bee populations, putting our food systems and ecosystems at risk. At a World Bee Day event, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the vital role bees play in our world and what you can do to help protect them. Whether you’re a bee enthusiast, a nature lover, or just curious, this event is the perfect way to get involved and make a difference.
