The Queen Lili’uokalani Canoe Race is the world’s largest long-distance canoe race. The international competition is held each year over Labor Day Weekend in honor of the Queen’s birthday on September 2. Over 2,500 paddlers from around the world come to Kona to compete.
Highlights of the Queen Lili’uokalani Canoe Race
- Saturday races feature the single-hull canoe races, which cover 18 miles between Kailua Pier and Hōnaunau. Saturday races will be live on Facebook @QueenLiliuokalaniCanoeRace.
- Saturday evening festivities include a torchlight parade through Kona.
- Sunday is the double-hull and other races, with awards presented at a lūʻau for competitors.
- Monday, enjoy the Kupuna Classic—a southward & northward paddle from Kailua-Kona to Keauhou Bay for those over 50 years of age and older.
