In May of 2023, the US Surgeon General declared social isolation and loneliness among older adults a public health crisis—the impact of loneliness is as serious as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. This workshop explores the prevalence of social isolation and loneliness and summarizes the research findings on how loneliness affects health, wellbeing, and mortality. Included in this workshop: A discussion on the risk factors of loneliness among older adults, and how friendships in later years can have a positive impact on your health and wellbeing.
