See prints by Kitagawa Utamaro, one of Japan’s earliest portrait artists. He was famed for his works capturing the women of the Yoshiwara brothel district: high-ranking courtesans and their young attendants, and waitresses working in the area’s tea houses. Utamaro’s works made the subjects celebrity fashion icons and today provide fascinating glimpse into personalities and lifestyles of the 18th century. The temporary exhibit “Big Heads: Portraits by Kitagawa Utamaro” is on view May 5 – August 13, 2023. Hawai‘i Resident 50% off regular admission. More info: Exhibitions | Honolulu Museum of Art
