Join this presentation by Hanafuda Hawaiʻi’s founder, Helen Nakano and her Sensei’s who will tell the story of Hanafuda Pilina. These cards turn the game of Hanafuda into a tale about the many different indigenous and invasive plants and animals in the Hawaiian Islands. After that, you’ll get the opportunity to learn and play Hanafuda! Due to the versatility of the playing style, attendees will be able to learn the Hanafuda Pilina style, while also being able to play the traditional Japanese way. Did you know? The name Hanafuda translates to “flower cards” in Japanese, reflecting the beautiful floral designs that adorn each card. The word Pilina for the Pilina Hanafuda cards come from the Hawaiian language meaning to bond or to connect, capturing the spirt of the game as a means of bringing people together with nature. Pre-registration for this program is advised due to limited seating. More info: Hawaii State Public Library SystemHanafuda Pilina
