Illnesses like the common cold can be caused by extremely tiny microbes called viruses. However, only a small portion of viruses make humans sick. Viruses are found in every environment like the ocean and are in fact beneficial to earth processes. University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Oceanography PhD candidate, Petra Byl, is fascinated by how the tiniest microorganisms can drive ecosystem-scale processes in our oceans. In this workshop, she will guide you through the nuanced world of viruses and you’ll get a chance to infect a mock host cell. More info: The Secret World of Viruses (librarieshawaii.org)
