2023 is officially the Year of the Kāhuli, Hawaiian land snails (Achatinella bulimoides), endemic to the windward and leeward slopes of the Northern Ko‘olau Mountains of O‘ahu where it was once very abundant. A specialist from the State Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Forestry & Wildlife Division will share information about these beautiful jewels of the forest. See a display of various Kāhuli shells, go on a virtual field trip to the Snail Extinction Prevention lab, get a glimpse of the forests where these snails live, and view a brief screening of the new, award-winning documentary “Kāhuli.” This free 45-minute program is suitable for ages 5 and older.
