HoMA’s new exhibition Japanese Design: Rinpa explores the profound influence that Japanese design has had on international aesthetics. With nearly a dozen works from HoMA’s permanent collection, the exhibition spans more than two centuries of Japanese design history. Rinpa-style design, characterized by compositional features such as asymmetry, innovative color combinations, contrasting patterns and semi-abstraction, is not so much an organized school as a series of loosely associated artists. These artists built upon historical foundations to introduce a new sense of aesthetics that infused artistry into all aspects of life, such as poetry, drinking tea, and garden design. Japanese Design: Rinpa will be on view in Gallery 3 from May 5–Oct 9, 2022. HoMA is open Thursday-Sunday. More info: Honolulu Museum of Art
