The 16th Annual Kū Mai Ka Hula, Maui’s only adult hula competition, features award-winning hālau from around Hawai‘i, the continental US and Asia, judged by renowned kumu hula, from around the pae ʻāina of Hawaiʻi. Kū Mai Ka Hula schedule of events
- Thursday, September 7, 7:30 pm. The weekend competition begins with a panel discussion with esteemed haku mele exploring the inspiration or personal muses that are essential when composing or choreographing mele. Also included in this evening are special performances by participating Maui Kumu Hula and their hālau.
- Friday, September 9, 6:00 pm. Pre-show entertainment from 4:30pm – 5:30pm. Solo Competition and Awards Ceremony. Male and female dancers vie for the title of Mr. and Ms. Hula Maui in kahiko & ‘auana styles and winners will be recognized the same evening in the solo awards ceremony.
- Saturday, September 10, 1:00 pm. Pre-show entertainment from 11:30am – 12:30pm. Group Competition and Awards Ceremony. Wahine and kāne dancers compete for first place in kahiko & ‘auana styles. There will also be a kupuna ʻauana category as part of the competition.
- Friday-Saturday. Attendees can browse and shop displays of made-in-Hawai’i products from an array of crafters and artisans before and throughout the Friday and Saturday performances.
