A collaboration with NirMānā Projects, Archipelago Research and Conservation, and Pacific Birds–Habitat Joint Venture has brought endangered local birds into the community’s day-to-day view. The birds are the ʻAʻo (Newell’s Shearwater), Aeʻo (Hawaiian Stilt), and the Koloa Maoli (Hawaiian Duck). The hope is to remind us of the importance to be good stewards of the land and animals here. This project was possible thanks to the Aloha ʻĀina grant from Hawaii Tourism Authority and Hawaii Community Foundation, as well as a private donation from Dale Haver. Special thanks to GP Roadway Solutions, Chara Hoe at Kuleana Contractors, and Jeff Vegas for assistance in prep and safety. Muralist Seth Womble created the bigger-than-life mural on a retaining wall on Kaumualiʻi Highway just west of the pedestrian bridge at the ʻEleʻele Shopping Center. Watch the mural come to life in the YouTub video below.
