Kilo Hōkū VR is a virtual reality simulation of sailing on the Hōkūleʻa, which is a waʻa kaulua (Hawaiian double-hulled sailing canoe) that was built in Hawai‘i in 1974 and completed a worldwide voyage in 2017. The Kilo Hōkū VR allows you to experience contemporary Hawaiian non-instrument navigation techniques and sail across the open ocean aboard the Hōkūleʻa within a virtual environment. Users can learn about the basics of modern Hawaiian wayfinding—the cultural practice of navigating across the open ocean to a destination without the use of Western maps or modern navigation instruments. The VR is free to download and can serve as a tool for educators and learners of Hawaiian wayfinding or anyone interested in learning about the Hōkūleʻa or Hawaiian wayfinding techniques. To use the Kilo Hōkū VR requires a HTC Vive or HTC Vive Pro Virtual Reality System and headset. Kilo Hōkū VR is available on itch.io as a free download; however, donations are accepted to support their work.
