Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea (Sovereignty Restoration Day) was declared by the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1843 following the five-month occupation of the Kingdom by Great Britain. In 2022, the Hawaiʻi State Legislature passed House Bill 2475, which Governor David Ige signed into law as Act 82, establishing July 31 as Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea. Join Friends of the Judiciary History Center at Aliʻiōlani Hale to examine the history of Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea and screen footage capturing Native Hawaiian resistance and advocacy. Look back on the momentous Tribunal in 1993 when lawyers and judges from across the world convened in Hawaiʻi to litigate Hawaiʻi’s independence. In-person Registration. Doors open 4:30 PM.
